There are people who think that if the wealthiest of the wealthy
are highly taxed, the money coming from the taxes would be able to sustainably
support those who are poor. But would that really work?
Years ago, I had a friend who was poor. She was unable to
work, and her ex-husband to be wanted to drain her financially. So, we stepped
in for a season, and a group of us from church worked with her on her finances.
Since she was not able to work, someone had to foot the bills.
We went over her budget with her. It was interesting because
some of the things that she needed money for were the same things I needed
money for. The same amount of money was budgeted for her as it was for us, and
we had a family of four to take care of.
Let’s see what the bills came to. Rent was $900/month. Food
was $600/month. Supplements were $600/month. Then there was the car, insurance,
electric and water bills, medical bills, etc. It came to a lot of money per month.
Plus, she wanted to get training in a career that she would have liked to start
someday, so we helped out with that as well.
Supporting her on a regular basis would be like supporting
another wife for my husband. Only our house and car were paid for.
Imagine paying those kinds of bills for everyone in poverty
in America. Would the taxes of the wealthy really cover the bills for all the poor people on an ongoing basis? What about the illegal immigrants entering our
country? Someone is going to have to pay their bills. Can the taxes of the rich
cover them also, on a regular basis?
Has someone ever done the math with this? It doesn’t take a
genius to figure out that this doesn’t work. It never worked in any country in
the past, and it won’t work in America in the future.
Don’t be deceived by these
leaders who are proposing that we tax the wealthy to pay for poverty. It will
never be enough, and the needs will continue even after the wealthy pass away.
It is just not a sustainable way to work the economics of a country.
